Follow the manual step by step to setup your sharing and ftp. Keep in mind that if you want to use FTP server from WAN (dyndns or static IP) you should NEVER use the anonymous mode. If you do, any anonymous user can read/write all your data in the USB drive plugged to wl500w. which is BAD.

Ok, once you have the settings sorted out you still cannot access your sharing drive from the network, right? this is not a big issue, just a basic DNS problem.

If you have a windows server o.s. with DNS server enabled, go in dnsmgmt, enter your zone, add a host(A) with your wl500w hostname and the IP address. from now on all the computers that use your DNS server as primary DNS. will be able to find the wl500w and access the shares.

If you have a windows client o.s. (xphome/pro, vista etc.), go in your windowssystem32driversetc folder, open the file “hosts” with notepad, go to the last line and add your wl500w ip and hostname. (default is 192.168.1.1 wl500w). Save your file and you are good to go. close network resources, browse again and you will be able to use the shares.
